In a unanimous decision, the Coral Springs city commissioners have enacted a temporary moratorium on the opening of new smoke and vape shops, effective for the next six months. This resolution was passed in an effort to address concerns about economic diversity, along with the health and safety of students and the community at large, as reported by TAPinto Coral Springs.

"This is more about the health and safety of our students and our community and economic diversity," stated a commissioner during the city commission meeting. Observations by City Commissioner Joshua Simmons have highlighted the influx of such shops, particularly their proximity to each other, and have contributed to the decision to bring forward this resolution. He expressed his concerns about a trend where "They’re not aesthetically pleasing. But also, it's become a target for vaping for underage students," as reported by NBC Miami.

As of now, Coral Springs has seen an increase in smoke and vape shops, reaching a total of 23 establishments. The proliferation has raised questions about their impact on the community, especially considering their locations near houses of worship, parks, and schools. Following these concerns, the commission has signaled its intent to explore potential changes in zoning and store placement regulations.

In recent enforcement checks by police, eight violators were found among an attempted 30 underage purchases in these local businesses. Simultaneously, school officials have disclosed 185 vaping incidents in public schools within the city. Amid these developments, one shop co-owner, Olivier, voiced skepticism about the moratorium's effectiveness in addressing the overarching issue: "The problem is everywhere," he said, as noted by NBC Miami.

During the six-month moratorium, city staff will delve into research and develop new rules that could reshape how smoke and vape shops operate within Coral Springs. These new strategies may encompass enhanced zoning rules and requirements determining shop distances from other stores, parks, and educational institutions. This period of assessment aims to ensure the decisions made are well-informed and address the various concerns that have been expressed by both officials and citizens.
