A Coral Springs Charter School teacher is now behind bars following allegations of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student, law enforcement authorities have confirmed. Joseph Michael Melendez, 33, was arrested by the Coral Springs Police Department’s Special Victims Unit on multiple felony charges, including sexual battery and lewd and lascivious behavior, as reported by WSVN.
Investigations into Melendez, which began on July 21, were triggered by an ex-student's affidavit claiming an illicit sexual relationship that started when they were a freshman and Melendez was serving as his teacher and after-school American Sign Language club advisor. This relationship reportedly continued into the victim's sophomore year. The police stated that additional evidence and statements were gathered to establish probable cause for an arrest. The eventual arrest occurred yesterday in the parking lot of the Northwest Regional Library, where Melendez later confessed to the relationship and acknowledged the victim's age at the time was 15.
In light of these serious charges, Melendez's former employer, Coral Springs Charter School—operated by Charter Schools USA and governed by the Coral Springs City Commission—has terminated his contract. "We were made aware today that a teacher was arrested. He no longer works at our school," Colleen Reynolds, a spokesperson for Charter Schools USA, told Local 10. Reynolds further emphasized the importance of student safety, stating, "The safety and security of our students is our number one priority. We take this very seriously and have taken all appropriate actions."
Details surrounding the case have been slowly coming to light. The Coral Springs police, who confirmed the arrest in a social media post earlier, have requested that the public refrain from calling their non-emergency lines for further information, indicating an ongoing investigation. Following due process, Melendez was booked into Broward County Main Jail after processing. With the case still developing, additional details may emerge as the legal proceedings continue.
