Travelers and residents surrounding Crawford County Route J are due for a major detour starting August 25, as the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) kicks off a bridge replacement project over Boone Creek. The outdated and structurally deficient bridge, which is 75 years old and beset by weight restrictions, will be replaced with a new box culvert. MoDOT's announcement details that the endeavor will result in a complete road closure for the construction period.
While the closure of Route J is set to disrupt the usual flow of traffic, MoDOT has put forward a signed detour - this path will usher vehicles through Route H, Missouri Route 185, Alice Street in Sullivan, and the North Service Road, according to the same announcement. Motorists will have to adapt to this rerouting until the project's completion; aiming for an end-of-October finish, weather permitting and understanding that construction schedules can be as unpredictable as the weather itself.
The need for this infrastructure overhaul cannot be understated, with the Boone Creek Bridge's age and wear rendering it a liability on the rural route network. This construction, which is part of an ongoing effort to modernize and safeguard Missouri's transportation arteries, is expected to alleviate the weight limit issue and improve safety for those traversing Route J. The bridge project, carrying a price tag of over $600,000, has been entrusted to Don Schnieders Excavating Company, Inc., a firm awarded the contract by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.
Commuters should prepare for the upcoming changes and budget additional time for travel as the outlined detour is likely to add minutes to the usual commute, patience will be as essential as the very concrete that will be laid to form the new crossing.
