A high-speed police chase on Interstate 75 in Gordon County spiraled into tragedy this past Saturday when it culminated in a fatal head-on collision. FOX 5 reported that a deputy, poised near the entrance ramp at mile marker 317, narrowly avoided being struck by an erratically driven Mercedes. Initiating a chase, the deputy sought to apprehend the vehicle as it veered across multiple lanes.
According to the Atlanta News First, the Mercedes, failing to yield and picking up speed, continued the pursuit, careening at speeds exceeding 100 mph. At the intersection of the S.R. 53 Bypass near Blackwood, the Mercedes crossed into oncoming traffic - a move that caused the deputies to halt their chase in the interest of public safety. However, within seconds of crossing the median, the vehicle collided with a Honda CR-V.
The impact was devastating – both vehicles ignited, and law enforcement galvanized to rescue the trapped occupants. FOX 5 detailed that one individual perished at the scene, while three others sustained injuries severe enough to necessitate airlifts to nearby hospitals. The driver of the Mercedes has remained unidentified due to the extent of their injuries, prompting ongoing efforts to establish their identity.
Currently, the Georgia State Patrol, with the county coroner's support, is investigating the incident.
