In an effort to combat potential tragedies involving children and unsecured firearms as the new school year approaches, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston has made a practical move by offering free gun safes to families. With the first day of class for DeKalb County School District taking place yesterday, Boston's office is giving away these safes in a bid to encourage parents and guardians to secure their weapons responsibly; the offer stands while supplies last at her office from Monday through Thursday, emphasized by Boston herself in a statement.
"Every year when we send our students back to school we talk to them about safety—how to stay safe walking to school, getting on the bus, etc.—my message to parents and guardians is that this is also a good time to talk to your children about firearm safety," DA Boston said in the statement obtained by the DeKalb County District Attorney's office the link to the Gun Safety webpage created by the DA's Office can be found on the DA's website, including safety tips and a video tutorial on the proper use of a gun safe to secure firearms.
The initiative to provide free gun safes commenced at two back-to-school events hosted by the DA's Office staff, where they engaged with hundreds of parents and guardians, aligning with the educational emphasis of the new academic year. Here, approximately 80 gun safes were distributed to families with kids in the City Schools of Decatur and the DeKalb County School District, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney's office.
These gun safes and locks have been made available through a strategic partnership between the DeKalb County Human Services Department and a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice; Office of Justice Programs, a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing public safety community-wide the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office, located at 556 N.
