Delray Beach has welcomed a new leader in law enforcement with the appointment of Darrell Hunter as Police Chief, a significant move that puts a seasoned veteran at the helm of the Delray Beach Police Department. Hunter, a longstanding member of the department since 2007, ascends from his previous position as Assistant Chief, equipped with an arsenal of experience that spans nearly two decades and multiple facets of police work.
City Manager Terrence R. Moore was confident in the choice of Hunter, praising his operational and administrative expertise and emphasizing his philosophy of community policing that, he believes, will deliver a stable future for the police department and foster continuous trust among the locals, according to the city's announcement.
Hunter's career is a tapestry of incrementally responsible roles, having served as a detective in the Investigative Division, supervisor of the Community Patrol Division and the Clean and Safe Unit, climbing the ranks through positions such as sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and assistant chief, signaling not just longevity but the growth of leadership within him. His academic accomplishments further herald his readiness, holding a graduate certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia, a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf University, and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University, paired with his graduation from the prestigious FBI National Academy, all of which are detailed in the city's press release.
"I am deeply honored to lead the men and women of the Delray Beach Police Department and to serve this incredible community," Hunter said in a statement that conveyed both his reverence for the position and his commitment to a set of core values he succinctly captured as P.A.C.E.—Professional, Accountable, Consistent, and Engaged; it wasn't just about leading a police department, it was about cultivating a culture of excellence and trust, integrity, and safety being paramount and which his appointment signals bust be the benchmarks going forward, as noted by the same press release.
