A semi-truck accident this morning led to the closure of a key ramp connecting westbound I-94 to eastbound I-96 in Detroit. As reported by ClickOnDetroit, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced that the incident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m., involved a semi that ended up on its side with a part of the trailer hanging off the ramp. By 5 a.m., a crane had been dispatched to the scene to move the semi.
The driver, a 26-year-old from Canada, apparently was traveling at a high speed before the crash occurred. As highlighted by FOX 2 Detroit, the incident resulted from merchandise shifting within the trailer when the driver was navigating the ramp too fast, causing the vehicle to overturn. While crews were trying to upright the trailer, its wall broke open, resulting in roughly 40,000 pounds of goods being spilled across the ramp.
The spilled merchandise complicated the situation, requiring a hands-on approach for cleanup, which was expected to prolong the duration of the ramp's closure. The driver's condition following the accident remains undisclosed. This crash reflects a concerning pattern of truck-related incidents on Detroit roads, with this being the second such accident due to excessive speed in less than a day, according to WXYZ.
