A 78-year-old Detroit man, James Albert Britton, has been charged with multiple felonies related to a shooting incident at a senior apartments complex in Detroit, prosecutors told CBS News Detroit. The shooting, which resulted in non-fatal injuries to three people, occurred at the Sheridan Place on East Jefferson Avenue on Monday night. According to authorities, the altercation began with a verbal dispute between Britton and one of the victims, suggested to involve a love triangle, as reported by Audacy's WWJ Newsradio.
Britton is facing a slew of charges that include four counts of assault with intent to murder and other firearms-related offenses, according to a statement from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. The charges stem from an incident where Britton, who was wounded in the shooting himself, was allegedly able to open fire multiple times after drawing a handgun during the argument. The 65-year-old man with whom Britton was arguing tackled him to the ground, causing Britton to drop his handgun. Standing nearby, the shooter, who was a 62-year-old woman, picked up Britton’s gun and fired it, hitting Britton, as per a report by ClickOnDetroit.
Medics rushed to the scene, finding the victims with various gunshot wounds, as noted by CBS News Detroit. The 65-year-old was shot in the right armpit and abdomen, the 70-year-old woman in the ankle, and the 64-year-old man with a graze to the cheek. Britton suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh. The brush with death occurred as the 62-year-old woman picked up Britton's gun and used it against him, non-fatally wounding the alleged assailant.
In the wake of the altercation, Britton's legal consequences quickly took shape. He was arraigned yesterday, and the court decreed his bond at $500,000 cash/surety with stipulations including a GPS tether and house arrest, as mentioned by ClickOnDetroit. Upcoming court dates include a bond re-determination hearing scheduled for August 18, a probable cause conference on August 27, and a preliminary examination on September 3.
