A fatal shooting in Dyersburg Tuesday night is currently under investigation by the local police department, resulting in one death and leaving another person injured. In a statement from the Dyersburg Police Department posted on their Facebook page, it was revealed that 25-year-old Nireonte Mayberry was shot and killed in the incident, while 20-year-old Jaylon Brown sustained a gunshot wound and was subsequently airlifted to Regional One Trauma Center in Memphis for treatment.
Authorities were called to Ab’s Vape and Tobacco Shop just before 11 p.m., where officers discovered the deceased. Lt. Mike Leggett of the DPD Criminal Investigation Division commented that Brown had managed to seek medical attention elsewhere before police arrived on the scene. "Officers arrived to find subjects inside, with Mayberry deceased," stated Leggett, indicating urgency in the response. The ongoing case looks to be possibly one of self-defense, though this has not been conclusively determined. "The preliminary investigation indicates this appears to have been a case of self-defense," said Leggett, per the Dyersburg Police Department.
The shop, located at 305 S. Main St., became a focal point of investigation as police worked to uncover the series of events that led up to the shooting. Currently, no additional details about the circumstances surrounding the fatal event or potential suspects are forthcoming.
