Two individuals lost their lives in a tragic vehicular accident early Sunday morning in West Phoenix. FOX 10 Phoenix reports that the incident involved two cars and occurred at the intersection of 57th Avenue and Indian School Road. Police responded to the scene around 5:56 a.m. on Sunday.
The collision claimed the life of 44-year-old Phyliss Wauneka found unresponsive at the location. Later, the Phoenix Fire Department declared her deceased. A second individual, identified as Antonio Wauneka, aged 37, was rushed to the hospital in a critical state, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. The driver of the second vehicle involved in the mishap was present when law enforcement arrived and was evaluated by detectives at the scene; no signs of impairment were found.
As police continue to delve into the circumstances surrounding the crash, ABC 15 reports that preliminary findings suggest Phyliss Wauneka was trying to cross Indian School Road northbound on 57th Avenue from a stop sign when the collision occurred, with speed being a potential contributing factor.
