In a straightforward turn of events, El Paso police officers, as part of an Auto Theft Task Force operation, singled out a stolen 2019 Kia Optima on the streets on August 18th. Behind the wheel was Hendrix Lee Flores, whose drive took a complex turn when the Texas Department of Public Safety stepped in to put the brakes on his escapade.
According to the El Paso Police Department, when attempts to flag him down were made, Flores hit the gas instead of the brakes. He led authorities on a pursuit that eventually wound down to a stop at Spur 601 and Loop 375; with no further complications, he was detained. The chase didn't end in high drama, thankfully, but the arrest was a result of a failed attempt to comply with a lawful traffic stop.
Flores is now facing charges for his less-than-lawful road trip; precisely, he has been charged with Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle, a title that succinctly captures the day’s events. After his arrest, officials at the El Paso County Detention Facility welcomed Flores to more stationary accommodations, and the justice system is set to take the wheel from there.
