Another life was tragically lost on the streets of El Paso last weekend, as the city's traffic-related death toll continues to climb. On August 9, at approximately 3:54 pm, local police responded to a severe accident at the intersection of Dyer and Sanders. The victim, identified as Antonio De La Cruz, was found partially ejected from his vehicle after slamming into a tree. Despite being rushed to a hospital, De La Cruz succumbed to his injuries.
According to the El Paso Police Department, De La Cruz had been waiting behind another car at a red light before choosing to abruptly drive around it, making a left turn onto Sanders, where he collided with the tree. The Special Traffic Investigations unit is still to further investigating to shed full light on the dynamics behind this accident.
In the wake of the crash, there has been speculation that alcohol might have been a contributing factor, although a final determination is pending. This incident marks the 36th traffic fatality in El Paso for the year, a slight decrease from the 39 deaths reported at the same time last year. The Special Traffic Investigations unit has taken up the case, continuing to look into the particulars of the crash.
