After more than 40 years of serving as a community hub and a birthplace of countless memories, Skate Along USA, a beloved Gwinnett County skating rink, is set to permanently close its doors at the end of this month. The rink made its announcement on Facebook, expressing deep gratitude for the support received over the decades. "It's the end of an era for us," the owners shared in a heartfelt farewell to their patrons, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta.
Devoted to truly honor the rink's lasting legacy, the owners are inviting skaters to visit during normal operating hours until the final day on August 24. Nostalgia echoes through the shared memories of the community, with comments flooding in as people recount tales from past decades. "Spent a lot of time there in the early 80's. Worked there for a few years, met and married a co-worker," John Taylor reminisced in a statement obtained by FOX5 Atlanta. Anna Marie Bennett added her own touch of reminiscence, "I remember school skate nights when I was at Arcado Elementary.. we’d all be doing the Hokey Pokey in the middle of the rink. I remember tagging along with my older brother whenever he went. We’d get dropped off and when we were ready to leave we’d use the pay phone to call my mom collect," she told the same source.
The reason behind the skating rink's closure has not been provided by the owners. What remains clear is that the establishment has been a fixture in the area, hosting everything from birthday parties to private events. As acknowledged by Atlanta News First, the owners of Skate Along USA thank their patrons for the "wonderful years," and seem to aim to ensure that the skating rink's final weeks are filled with the joy and community spirit that have been its hallmark.
With the end imminent, the rink's last day is poised to be a culmination of over four decades of history. Skaters are encouraged to come and take their final laps during the final operating hours, which include Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons into the night, as well as a special Adult Night every Wednesday.
