Early Wednesday morning, a chaotic scene unfolded in Englewood on the South Side, which resulted in four people, including three police officers, being hospitalized after a police-involved shooting, said the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the incident took place in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue.
Details are sparse, but according to a source, the altercation involved shots being exchanged after someone in a car reportedly ran into at least one officer. Officers broadcast a "10-1" distress call shortly after 5:00 a.m., per Sun-Times. All injured parties were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The civilian's condition remains unknown, while the police officers suffered injuries that Larry Merritt, a fire department spokesperson, described as "nothing serious."
As the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, Chicago police have not yet released any specific details regarding the shooting. For those in the vicinity with information, authorities are urging individuals to come forward and contact the Chicago police at 312-746-3609.
FOX 32 Chicago notes that the police presence was heavy with several squad cars at the scene, and more than a dozen officers, along with red tape, cordoning off the area. Two other locations, one at 70th Street and Yale Avenue and the other on the 75th Street ramp to the Dan Ryan Expressway, also experienced police activity, though their relation to the shooting has yet to be clarified.
The community currently lingers in a state of uncertainty, waiting for more information as to the nature of the incident and the events leading up to the gunfire. In the meantime, the response has triggered a rigorous protocol by COPA to investigate the incident, aiming to unravel the layers of the morning's tumultuous events and bring transparency to a watchful public eye.
