Drivers navigating the Belle Chasse area should prepare for extended delays as the Belle Chasse Bridge and Tunnel Replacement Project has announced extended lane closures set to persist through early November. According to a recent update posted by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), the closures will impact both northbound and southbound traffic along LA 23 between Dale Avenue and Barriere Road as well as the Engineers Road detour.
The schedule for these intermittent lane closures is as follows: Monday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday, and Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. until just before Monday's 5 a.m. morning commute. These closures are necessary due to ongoing construction work along LA 23 and nearby roadways.
Motorists should be aware that weekly lane closure updates will be provided by the project team, cautioning that these are subject to alterations. Possible delays might arise due to unpredictable factors such as adverse weather or shifting scheduling demands.
As construction continues on the X Street Ramp and related projects, upcoming changes to the LA 23 medians and the Engineers Road island will direct traffic into its final planned configuration. Traffic is expected to shift into this configuration following the completion of the current phase. However, the layout may change with little notice if the final traffic switch occurs before the scheduled closure period ends.
