Tragedy struck Highway 395 near Lake County on the first day of August when a bicyclist was fatally hit by a pickup truck. According to Oregon State Police, their preliminary investigation found that Robert Patrick McGee, aged 69, was riding southbound on the highway when a white GMC 3500 HD, driven by 64-year-old Greg Alan Stiles of Guernville, California, attempted a pass that resulted in a collision.
Struck by the white GMC, McGee did not survive the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. Oregon State Police reported Stiles, the GMC's driver, showed signs of impairment at the time of the crash. Riding with Stiles, passenger Diego Rosas Ojeda, 48, from Santa Rosa, California, escaped the accident unharmed.
The incident forced the closure of Highway 395 for approximately six hours, as investigators worked and responders cleared the area. According to official reports, assisting the Oregon State Police were the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The investigation is ongoing and authorities have not yet released further details on possible additional charges for Stiles. On-scene for hours, the OSP continues to investigate the circumstances of this fatal encounter between vehicle and bicycle.
