Yesterday morning, tragedy struck Portland's Lloyd District neighborhood as a crash involving a tractor-trailer claimed the life of one pedestrian and left another seriously injured. The incident occurred at the intersection of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Holladay Street around 2:46 a.m. According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers from the North Precinct were dispatched following reports of the collision.
Upon arrival, police discovered two individuals affected by the crash. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was quickly taken to a local hospital with severe injuries; the long-term effects of which are yet uncertain. The tractor-trailer's driver, who initially did not stop after the crash, was later followed by a conscientious witness. This act enabled officers from the Central Precinct to eventually stop and detain the driver at Highway 224 and Southeast Johnson Road. It remains to be confirmed whether the driver was conscious of the collision when they left the scene.
The Portland Police's Major Crash Team from the Traffic Division has undertaken the investigation of this distressing event. Due to this ongoing inquiry, a section of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard was closed from Northeast Multnomah Street to Northeast Pacific Street. Investigators are now diligently working to piece together the circumstances that led up to the crash.
