In a sobering reminder of the dangers of driving while impaired, two individuals have been apprehended on separate occasions for DUI after driving the wrong direction on key Florida highways. The Florida Highway Patrol has been proactively working to prevent tragedies on roads such as I-4 and SR 408. In two close calls, troopers were able to safely stop the wrong-way drivers before any harm could ensue.
One such incident occurred on State Road 408 in Orange County, where a driver, named Jessica Montano, was spotted traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. Another event unfolded on I-4 in Seminole County, involving driver James Manning. In a statement obtained by WFTV, Trooper Migdalisis Garcia with FHP expressed relief: "Thank God we were there and able to apprehend these two DUI’s and put a stop to the wrong way driving."
This focus on road safety is particularly critical as the Florida Highway Patrol has recently launched the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. Their efforts can be seen to make a significant difference; from 2022 to 2024, drunk driving arrests were reduced by more than 8% statewide. "Once we stop you and we notice there is impairment, you will take the ride to jail," Trooper Garcia said, per WFTV.
Another detailed account comes from FOX 35 Orlando, where Trooper Guerrier was quick to react to a blue Hyundai driving westbound in the eastbound lanes on SR 408 near mile marker 10. The driver, James Michael Manning, eventually pulled over but exhibited clear signs of impairment. Troopers report that Manning struggled to maintain balance during field sobriety exercises and refused to provide a breath sample at the DUI testing center.
The Florida Highway Patrol's vigilance and the existing roadway safety measures have proven effective, with the Central Florida Expressway Authority citing an 88% effectiveness rate in deterring wrong-way driving through signs, alerts, and flashing lights.
