In an attempt to curb rising youth violence in Fort Wayne, Mayor Sharon Tucker has unveiled the city's Youth Violence Prevention Program. According to the City of Fort Wayne press release, the program plans to deploy $250,000 from American Rescue Plan Act interest earnings to support local initiatives, upon approval from the City Council. Mayor Tucker affirmed that these funds, instead of tax dollars, will boost efforts by individuals and organizations striving to alleviate teen violence.

The proposed financial aid includes microgrants of up to $10,000 and interested parties can apply through a new portal, ready to function post-City Council's green light. Aspiring grantees can find the essential information for funding applications on the city's website. Mayor Tucker's recently launched Young Adult Council has the task to sift through the proposals, tasked with the responsibility of recommending the ones destined for funding. Pending City Council approval, according to the City of Fort Wayne's document, they will ensure that recipients meet the intended goals and objectives to receive the full allocation of funds.

Concrete measures are also in the pipeline, with the creation of a part-time community liaison role within the Fort Wayne Police Department. This individual, working in close proximity with Mayor Tucker, will be instrumental in bridging the gap between law enforcement and young people, assisting in the implantation of youth programs, and enhancing communication with the public. Moreover, Mayor Tucker's Youth Engagement Council, which includes high school students from the sophomore to senior level, is gearing up to facilitate a youth-led discussion on violence for those aged 14-18.

Fort Wayne residents were given an opportunity to engage in this critical conversation about youth violence during a recent forum convened by Mayor Tucker. Officials presented their roles and engaged with the community, alongside figures like Police Chief Scott Caudill and community advocates such as Roderick Parker of Big Hearts Community Projects and Foundation One of the Unity Barber Shop. The City of Fort Wayne's intergovernmental affairs director, Andrew Downs, moderated the event, which can be viewed via the public library's video hosting platform.

At this gathering, the mayor made a heartfelt plea, saying, "Many people have asked how they can help right now. The answer is simple: give your time. Volunteer with a youth organization. If you see a young person, offer them your time and your heart. Listen to them. Encourage them," Mayor Tucker is quoted by the City of Fort Wayne's document. She summarized her call to action with, "Together, we can make a lasting and positive impact. I’m asking for City Council and the public to join me to do all we can to invest in our children and set them on a path that will be rewarding and effective with endless possibilities."
