Earlier today, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the indictment of four Bronx teenagers on charges connected to the brutal killing of 14-year-old Angel Mendoza in a local playground. As per details revealed by the Bronx DA's Office, the youth was fatally stabbed in what has been described as a retaliation attack gone tragically awry. Charged with second-degree murder and related counts, these teens are alleged to have turned a place of play into the scene of a violent crime.
According to the Bronx DA's Office press release, on August 5, 2022, at around 7:40 P.M., Angel Mendoza was allegedly approached and assaulted by the defendants. This assault was said to wrongly target Mendoza in a revenge act for a stabbing earlier that day involving the sibling of one suspect. In the words of DA Clark, "These defendants, two of whom are boys, allegedly beat, pistol whipped and stabbed the victim, turning a playground into a killing field." The victim was rushed to Jacobi Hospital following the attack but succumbed to his injuries.
In the case against the defendants, prosecutors have accessed cell phone video evidence that captures the attack. The video also points to two additional perpetrators who remain at large at this stage. Named in the indictment and arraigned are Andrew Ansah and Jordan Williams, both 18 years of age, with the other two younger defendants set to appear in court at a later date.
Justice for Angel Mendoza is at the forefront of the prosecution's endeavours, with the Bronx DA's Office stating firmly, "We will hold accountable those who ended this boy’s life. We will get justice for Angel and endeavor to bring some semblance of peace to his loved ones." The commitment to pursuing this case rigorously is supported by NYPD investigators and the Homicide Bureau's tireless efforts to thoroughly unravel the events leading up to the tragic outcome. The four teens face charges including second-degree Murder, first-degree Manslaughter, and first and second-degree Gang Assault, among others.
