In a late-night incident escalating rapidly into a cross-county police chase, four teenagers were arrested after allegedly carjacking an Uber driver in north St. Louis. FOX 2 NOW reports that the carjacking occurred around 11 p.m. yesterday on the 4400 block of Kennerly Avenue. The 67-year-old Uber driver, when arriving for a pickup, was confronted by one of the juveniles brandishing a firearm, demanding the driver to abandon his vehicle, wherein the suspect discharged the weapon without causing injury.
Following the theft, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers were alerted to the vehicle's whereabouts through the Real-Time Crime Center, according to statements obtained by KSDK. The ensuing traffic stop attempt around Union Boulevard and Cote Brilliante Avenue failed, igniting a pursuit that spanned into neighboring St. Louis County. The chase concluded near I-70 and Lindbergh Boulevard, ironically, due to a flat tire acquired by the carjacked vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that the culprits, upon the termination of their ill-fated getaway, fled on foot, resulting in a brief manhunt. The suspects, including a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, along with two 15-year-olds, were ultimately detained and transported to St. Louis County Juvenile Detention. Collaboration among local precincts and Metro Air Support were instrumental in the swift capture of the adolescents.
Concurrently, an unfortunate collision between two police cruisers in the midst of the chase incurred injury to one officer. The unnamed officer was taken to the hospital for neck pain, as highlighted by a report from First Alert 4, affirming the risks law enforcement personnel encounter during such unexpected urban tumults. Information has not yet been released regarding the condition of an officer or any potential consequences the juveniles may face.
