
An investigation is underway concerning the death of an inmate in the Towns County Jail. According to a report by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 44-year-old Brian William Whitney of Hiawassee, GA, was found unresponsive by deputies last Saturday.
The GBI was called upon to investigate by the Towns County Sheriff's Office after Whitney was pronounced dead on scene once emergency medical services arrived. At first glance, there is currently no indication of foul play involved in Whitney's death. An autopsy is scheduled to take place at the GBI Crime Lab to ascertain the precise cause of death.
Whitney's incarceration details and the circumstances leading up to his death have not been provided at this time. Towns County officials, upon discovering the inmate unresponsive at approximately 3:05 a.m., acted according to protocol in their response to the critical situation. As the GBI continues its investigation, it is expected that further details will emerge. "Preliminary information indicates that there was no foul play involved in Whitney’s death," GBI stated.
