The Georgia Department of Corrections has announced that on September 5, it will facilitate a Family Day for registered family members and significant others of inmates, as reported by the department's official release. This gathering is designed for approved visitors to discuss the dynamics of incarceration with departmental figures and learn about parole from the Board of Pardons and Paroles. However, those planning to attend should note that the registration, which opened on August 1, has already hit its 500-person maximum, promptly closing the opportunity for additional participants.
For individuals who made the cutoff, the event stipulates a stringent check-in procedure at Roberts Chapel, where attendees will need to present identification and the inmate's GDC number. Security measures will be in place, and guests are advised to bring minimal items. Once inside, attendees will be given color-coded numbers correlating with the department representative they are scheduled to meet, and asked to wait in the chapel until their number, is called.
According to the guidance provided by the Georgia Department of Corrections, preparation for the day should involve noting down any pertinent questions beforehand. This is crucial as time with GDC representatives has been confined to 10-minute intervals to manage the high volume of attendants. Special accommodations are mentioned for those requiring physical assistance, which will be provided via golf cart transportation to the Vinzant Hall where the meetings will occur.
For visitors desiring a rare audience with the Commissioner, it's a game of first-come-first-serve. The Commissioner plans to meet with a total of 18 people for individual 10-minute discussions. Guests are encouraged to don comfortable attire to navigate potentially long periods of walking or standing. All these measures aim to ensure a streamlined day, affording as many as possible the chance to voice concerns and seek answers within the limitations of the schedule and space.
