The Thermal camera system operates by detecting anomalies in temperature that exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit within the hopper, which kickstarts an alarm within the driver's cab, forewarning of the potential incendiary hazard. This proactive measure addresses the spontaneous combustion nature of lithium-ion batteries, which "can burn very quick, and that's the danger" as Goodyear Solid Waste Superintendent Adam Kurtz told goodyearaz.gov. According to Kurtz, once the blaze ignites, a runaway fire can rapidly escalate.
