Following an intensive investigation spearheaded by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) detectives, a 39-year-old Hayward resident was apprehended in connection with a shooting event on I-880 dating back to May. The suspect, identified as Rony David Murciascastillo, was linked to an incident occurring on May 26 when another motorist reported gunfire while they were entering the northbound lane from Jackson Street. Happily, the exchange of bullets did not lead to any physical injuries.
Last Wednesday, the CHP Special Investigations Unit and the Golden Gate Division Warrant Service Team made their move, having served a search warrant at Murciascastillo’s home. Using carefully coordinated efforts, detectives found him at a San Pablo casino. The San Pablo Police Department, in collaboration with the CHP team, was responsible for swiftly and safely bringing Murciascastillo into custody.
Once in the grip of the law, Murciascastillo found himself booked at Santa Rita Jail under heavy charges, including suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and several felony gun and drug charges. The gravity of these accusations reflects a resolve by the CHP to stem the tide of violence that can erupt so unexpectedly on our roadways.
In a show of appreciation for the diligent investigative work and interdepartmental cooperation, CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Don Goodbrand heralded the teams involved, stating, “The incredible work our detectives do is responsible for yet another freeway shooter being held to answer for their crimes.” To round off the commendations, Goodbrand also extended gratitude to their partners at the San Pablo Police Department for their pivotal role in the arrest, according to the CHP Golden Gate.
