Bay Area residents, brace yourselves for a sweltering couple of days ahead. The National Weather Service San Francisco has issued a Heat Advisory from Thursday to Friday across much of the interior Bay Area and Central Coast. According to the advisory, maximum temperatures can soar into the 90s and even lower 100s in some areas. It’s time to stock up on water, dig out the lightest clothing you own, and secure your shady spot because, folks, it's going to be a scorcher.
Not everyone has built-in cooling systems or the luxury of working indoors, and this heat wave isn't pulling any punches. The NWS warning categorizes the situation as a "Moderate HeatRisk," meaning heat-related illnesses are more likely for heat-sensitive populations like children, the elderly, pregnant women, and anyone who works or spends a lot of time outdoors. As the mercury climbs, staying hydrated and finding relief in shaded areas isn't just advisable, it’s essential for safety.
But the heat isn't the only concern. The the National Weather Service's forecast discussion has highlighted "Elevated Fire Weather conditions" due to the hot and dry spell. As of today, the forecast for the Bay Area indicates the high-pressure system will not only bring temperatures up but keep them there through the weekend. This extended exposure to heat amplifies the risk of fires, with the service noting that the combination of sweltering days and warm nights will further dry out vegetation, priming the landscape for potential wildfires.
It's not all about the dry heat, though. The weekend might throw us a curveball with some unexpected humidity. "Friday into Saturday becomes a little more interesting as some monsoonal moisture begins to ride the western periphery of the ridge," NWS explains, which could make the air feel muggy. Though there's "a non-zero chance for dry lightning Friday and Saturday across the Central Coast," with the possibility of thunderstorms, current models aren't raising major alarms yet, maintaining a dry forecast for now. However, given the time of year and the rapidly changing atmosphere, eyes are peeled on how this scenario might evolve.
As for Bay Area mariners, the conditions out at sea aren’t escaping the weather’s grasp either. Through late week, the NWS Marine advisory notes "Breezy to gusty northwest winds especially across the outer waters and coastal jet regions," with winds expected to die down a bit over the weekend. For those navigating these waters, keeping abreast of the latest marine forecasts and exercising caution while out on open water will be essential.
