The Houston Police Department is investigating after a woman's body was found floating in Brays Bayou last night. According to KHOU, the deceased was spotted around 7 p.m. north of West Park Tollway. HPD's Lieutenant Larry Crowson remarked that while the bayou had a current, rescue teams from the Houston Fire Department managed to retrieve the body before it advanced further downstream.
In a statement obtained by the Houston Chronicle, Lieutenant Crowson mentioned, "There were no obvious signs of foul play." The identity of the adult female, as well as the manner of her death, will be determined following an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The discovery of the body coincided with heavy storm activity, which had led to the swelling of Brays Bayou and, subsequently, multiple high-water rescue operations in the area. The Houston Chronicle also reported that Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to at least two high-water rescues that same evening, one involving a vehicle stalled in high water and another being a water rescue operation.
As conditions worsened that evening, firefighters positioned themselves downstream in anticipation of rising bayou waters. This allowed for a quick recovery near 4300 Belle Park Drive. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called the evening dangerous due to the storm’s intensity and its impact on local waterways.
