Robocallers, be warned: the days of bombarding Illinois residents with scam and spam calls may be numbered. Attorney General Kwame Raoul, aligned with a bipartisan group of 50 attorneys general, has rolled out "Operation Robocall Roundup," an initiative directed at cutting down on the pervasive robocall problem in the state, as per the Illinois Attorney General's office. The task force kicked off its action plan by sending out a strong message in the form of warning letters to 37 voice service providers, demanding they put a stop to illegal robocalls being funneled through their networks.
"Today's announcement is the latest step taken in our task force’s efforts to address intrusive and illegal robocalls that plague Illinoisans," Attorney General Raoul delineated, emphasizing his commitment to collaboration with his peers and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in defending consumers and ensuring telecom companies adhere to the established guidelines, this statement comes from the source mentioned previously. The implicated providers have disregarded FCC rules that mandate response to government traceback requests, and have not even registered in the FCC’s Robocall Mitigation Database or submitted a plan to mitigate illegal robocalls.
Further measures see Raoul and his colleagues also sending cautionary notices to over 100 downstream providers, alerting them of their potentially dubious business relationships with these noncompliant voice service companies. The list includes names such as Advantage Investors LLC, Belthrough, and Voip Torque, among others, originating from the same release. In a more drastic step, the FCC has decided to excise seven providers from the Robocall Mitigation Database, effectively severing their ability to have their call traffic accepted or routed by other providers, the aforementioned agency communicated on Wednesday.
Such robust efforts against robocalls aren't unprecedented; back in 2022, an assembly of 51 attorneys general came together to forge the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force aimed at investigating and initiating legal action against entities behind substantial amounts of illegal and fraudulent robocall traffic traversing the United States, the shot across the bow for robocallers was fired with Raoul at the forefront of the ongoing battle, he has been a staunch advocate for consumer protections against these unsolicited calls, joining forces with fellow attorneys general and phone companies to hammer out principles to combat them and engaging in enforcement and legislative actions as detailed by the Illinois Attorney General’s office.
Residents of Illinois, and indeed those across the States, can perhaps look forward to a future with fewer disruptions from robocalls, as these concerted actions aimed at reining in the responsible providers continue to gain momentum.
