Indiana’s third graders have recorded a notable improvement in literacy rates. State Representative Jake Teshka credited the progress to the combined efforts of teachers, families, and students, noting that third graders are making measurable gains across all student groups and expressing appreciation to educators and families for their role in this achievement, as per the Indiana House Republicans.

Under Teshka’s leadership, the Indiana Statehouse has passed legislation aimed at improving literacy. In 2023, he authored a law establishing science of reading standards to support students with reading difficulties. In 2024, he supported Senate Enrolled Act 1, described as a comprehensive plan to ensure reading proficiency.

According to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress rankings, Indiana now ranks sixth in the nation for reading proficiency among fourth and eighth graders. WalletHub also ranked the state eighth nationally for best education environment.

Teshka said he hopes the progress will continue and that Indiana will remain a leader in advancing education.
