The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has arrested a 27-year-old man, Larry Duerson, in connection with two violent sexual assaults along the Monon Trail. According to a news release from IMPD, cited by FOX59, Duerson was apprehended on Thursday in the 3400 block of N Keystone Ave., on preliminary charges of kidnapping, attempted rape, and strangulation. The assaults occurred just six days apart, in close proximity to where the Monon Trail crosses over Fall Creek.
The first report of an attempted assault was filed on August 8, prompting response from officers of IMPD's north district. The subsequent attack, similar to the first, led to the identification and arrest of the suspect. In a disturbing revelation, as reported by IndyStar, Duerson was supposed to be on house arrest at the time of the incidents. Both victims were assaulted by a man who grabbed them from behind after they had passed him on the trail.
In statements obtained by WTHR, a local runner Bowen said, "she rarely goes on the trail alone or in the dark and carries pepper spray." Another runner, Meek, added, "Even though we're together, I'm constantly looking, not only for oncoming cars, vehicles, but somebody that might be somewhat questionable."
The IMPD has increased patrol in the area since the incidents, urging everyone to remain vigilant while authorities continue their investigation.
