With a heat wave gripping the city, Jacksonville officials have taken measures to help residents stay cool by activating Cooling Centers throughout the area. According to a recent announcement on the City of Jacksonville's official website, these centers will be operational today, providing a much-needed respite from the sweltering temperatures.

In an effort to beat the oppressive heat, residents can find safe haven in the city's 21 public libraries, 20 community centers, and numerous aquatic facilities, including 29 pools and 16 splash pads. The splash pads and pools will, however, only be open on Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day. This initiative includes free transportation courtesy of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA). To take advantage of the complimentary rides, passengers need to inform the bus drivers that their destination is one of the Cooling Centers.

Seeking additional ways to keep cool? The city suggests avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, which usually fall between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. They also recommend wearing lightweight, loose clothing and spending time in air-conditioned spaces when possible. As for hydration, authorities emphasize the importance of drinking plenty of water and limiting intake of alcohol and caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.

Staying informed is key during such extreme weather conditions. The city reminds residents to monitor weather updates and be aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat. Such symptoms require immediate medical attention and moving to a cooler environment, "If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, seek medical help immediately and move to a cooler environment," the City of Jacksonville website stressed.
