The streets of Phoenix became the backdrop for a high-speed chase last November, as Johnny Lee Castillo eluded police at dangerous speeds, weaving through oncoming traffic and placing many lives at risk. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has announced his indictment on several felony charges, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Castillo's troubles began with a theft investigation at a retail store which quickly escalated when he struck a Phoenix Police officer while fleeing the scene. His attempt to avoid capture continued for days until police located him, sparking a second pursuit. Throughout the harrowing chase, Castillo exceeded speeds of 100 MPH, showing a brazen disregard for the safety of officers, motorists, and pedestrians, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Now facing serious legal consequences, Castillo has been charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault (Dangerous), a Class Two Felony, and one count of Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement Vehicle, a Class Five Felony. These charges reflect the gravity of his actions which spanned across multiple jurisdictions and ended after an intense intervention by the police, as stated by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
The indictment carries a significant weight, and Castillo is being held on a $100,000 secured appearance bond. To secure release before the trial, which is scheduled for November, he would need to pay a sum equal to 10% of the full bond amount. Given the high stakes of the situation, Castillo remains in custody with his future hanging in the balance, as per the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
