La Vergne's summer was marked by more than high temperatures this Saturday as local law enforcement and fire department personnel teamed up to host the first-ever Summer Safety Day, aimed at teaching kids about safety in fun, engaging ways. About two dozen eager young minds gathered to learn, directly from the source, how they can keep themselves and their neighborhoods secure.
Focused on practical know-how, the day included activities like bike safety courses led by Sgt. Bill Timson and fire safety discussions courtesy of Life Safety Officer Kevin Douglas. Kids also got their hands on decorating their own bike helmets, which they could take home. These helmets were not just throwaway gear; the IAFF Firefighters Association and Ascend Federal Credit Union generously donated them. Officers like Algernon Thompkins, Jonathan McCall, and Colton Jeralds allowed children to explore police vehicles and ask all the burning questions they had about law enforcement tools and uniforms.
"Fire and safety education isn’t always easy to access," Life Safety Officer Douglas told La Vergne's news page. Emphasizing the importance of such community events, he noted that they are essential for proactive learning that could save lives. Similarly, the local officers emphasized connection over simply imparting safety tips, aiming to foster a sense of trust between the youth and the police force.
The event wrapped up with pizza, giving kids and organizers alike a time to relax and reflect on the day's experiences. Moreover, community engagement coordinator Kari Harris hinted at the future, saying, "This was just the beginning." According to La Vergne's official announcement, plans are already in motion to make Summer Safety Day an annual event. Parents and kids looking forward to next year's activities, or interested in the La Vergne Fire Explorers Program, can find more details on the city's website or by stalking their social media.
