A man found sleeping in a vehicle that was illegally parked in a handicap space in Lake Worth was arrested after police discovered a meth pipe on his person, a firearm, and multiple pieces of stolen identification. The Lake Worth Police Department identified the suspect as 42-year-old Matthew Smith, who has now been charged with significant felonies; specifically, fraudulent use or possession of identifying information and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, as detailed by FOX 4 News.
Upon their approach to the car the officers observed the methamphetamine pipe in clear view resting on Smith's lap which prompted them to detain him, thereupon a further search of the vehicle ensued leading to the discovery of the small pistol and the 18 pieces of stolen identification including credit cards, debit cards, and checks none of which belonged to Smith, which was similarly reported by CBS News Texas.
Several victims were contacted by the Lake Worth Police, and the theft of their credit cards and checks was corroborated; all items confirmed to have been taken during recent vehicle burglaries. Lake Worth authorities have highlighted this incident to stress the risks of leaving cars unsecured, as such practices can entice the theft of not just weapons but also personal information that can wreak havoc on individuals' lives.
