Oklahoma's own Rep. Daniel Pae, representing Lawton, has recently been afforded a noteworthy accolade. Mental Health America (MHA), a pillar in the realm of mental health advocacy, dubbed Pae a 2025 Legislative Champion. The honor is one that recognizes those in the legislative trenches who have shown exceptional commitment to championing mental well-being.
The path to this accolade began at the behest of Mental Health Association Oklahoma, which nominated Pae in light of his role as co-chair for the bipartisan Oklahoma Mental Health Caucus. Pae has been instrumental in forwarding the legislative agenda around mental health care, aiming to, as he expressed, treat mental health with both urgency and compassion. "I’m truly honored to receive this award from Mental Health America," Pae said, according to an Oklahoma House of Representatives release. He continued by stressing the importance of mental health to the "overall well-being of our communities," acknowledging the collaborative effort across party lines to enhance access to mental health resources.
This recognition from MHA isn't isolated to Pae’s leadership in the caucus. It also celebrates his legislative craftsmanship, specifically in the authoring of House Bill 2012. This piece of legislation sought to expand harm reduction programs, a critical move amidst the backdrop of substance use issues threatening community health. While the bill managed to cut through the House, it failed to secure a slot on the Senate floor this session.
Pae, as chair of the House Appropriations & Budget Subcommittee on Human Services, holds a crucial position perfectly poised to influence policy shifts necessary for meaningful impact. It's clear that this honor by MHA isn't simply about a single bill or initiative. Rather, it's about a concerted effort to deeply understand, and to actively engage with, the multilayered tableau of mental health concerns - an effort Pae seems wholeheartedly committed to. "There is growing momentum in Oklahoma to treat mental health with the urgency and compassion it deserves," Pae tells his audience as per the Oklahoma House of Representatives statement.
