Douglas Gibson, a 40-year-old man from Lebanon, Indiana, has been handed a 40-year sentence in federal prison for his crimes involving the sexual exploitation of a minor. He has also been sentenced to a lifetime of supervised release following his time behind bars. Gibson's conviction was on charges of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and Committing a Felony Offense while being required to register as a sex offender, as reported by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana.

Court documents reveal that Gibson, who had been required to register as a sex offender since at least 2011 due to a previous sexual misconduct conviction, secretly installed cameras in the child's bedroom and bathroom between 2018 and 2021. These devices were used to record Minor Victim 1, who was born in 2011, during private moments. The footage captured was saved to Gibson's laptop and shared via private chat rooms on a social media platform. Gibson was also found to be in possession of other illicit images and videos involving prepubescent children. according to the Department of Justice.

In a statement obtained by the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler expressed his position on the matter, stating, "Simply put, Douglas Gibson is a danger to children." He further indicated the violation of trust and safety, emphasizing that a child's home should be a space of safety and love, which Gibson egregiously violated.

Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Indianapolis Timothy J. O’Malley remarked on the severity of the offense, acknowledging the stern implications of Gibson's sentencing and reaffirming the FBI's ongoing commitment to protecting children. The Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force played a crucial role in the investigation, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts in safeguarding vulnerable members of the community, a spokesperson with Indiana ICAC said.

The prosecution of this case was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany Preston. This instance of the legal system’s intervention is a part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at addressing the growing problem of child sexual exploitation.
