According to a NBC Los Angeles report, the new initiatives are a response to years of high-risk maneuvers and chaos at major intersections and even freeways. Street takeovers like the ones on South Main Street which culminated in the looting of an AutoZone, and the tragic incident on Christmas night in 2022, where a woman was hit by a vehicle performing donuts, are pressing officials into action. A woman was also injured in April 2024 during a takeover at Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street, illustrating the peril these events pose to the community.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department documented this troubling increase in their March report, noted by FOX LA. The rise in such events in 2024 has become a significant concern for residents and law enforcement alike. With the direct correlation between takeovers and other criminal activities such as the looting of nearby businesses, steps are being contemplated to impose stiffer penalties and enforce stricter control.
Local authorities reflect on tackling the menace with more than just heavy fines. In April, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors passed a motion to double fines from $500 to $1,000 for those who participate in — or even spectate — these unlawful takeovers, as per information from KTLA.
