Tragedy struck on a Louisiana highway earlier this week when a head-on collision resulted in the death of a local man. The accident, involving a Kia Optima and a Dodge Ram, took place last Saturday, roughly after 2 p.m. on LA Highway 358 near its intersection with Highway 357, as reported by Louisiana State Police Troop I.
According to the preliminary investigation, 38-year-old Alex Chavis of Church Point was behind the wheel of the Kia, traveling westbound, when for uncertain reasons, the vehicle swerved into the eastbound lane. Making a direct hit, the Kia collided with the oncoming Dodge truck. The impact was severe enough that Chavis, who was unrestrained by a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Dodge, by contrast, was buckled in properly and, while seriously injured, survived. They were promptly taken to a nearby hospital to receive essential medical care. Their current condition has not been updated since first reported, though the injuries were described as serious.
While the inquiry into what caused Chavis to cross into opposing traffic continues, standard toxicology samples have been taken from both drivers, awaiting analysis. This is a common procedure in such incidents to determine if impairment played a role. The authorities, grappling with the aftermath, have taken this moment to remind the public of basic road safety.
