Traffic in Marion County faced major disruptions following two separate crashes today, with both Interstate highways affected by closures and investigations by state authorities. According to FOX59, a crash on I-465 eastbound led to the closure of the right three lanes at the 1.2-mile marker due to reported injuries, while WTHR noted the closure of southbound I-69 near 116th Street in Fishers after a serious crash involving multiple semis.
The Indiana Department of Transportation warned commuters of significant delays on both stretches, with the I-465 incident occurring Tuesday morning disrupting the flow of traffic into the heart of the county, while the I-69 accident compounded travel woes in Fishers, shutting down the southbound lanes close to a popular shopping destination and causing traffic to be diverted, this compounded the traffic woes faced by commuters that was already facing frustration from lane closures. IndyStar reported that exit 205, adjacent to the IKEA store, was closed.
Reconstruction teams from the Indiana State Police were dispatched to both scenes to investigate the crashes. Sgt. John Perrine, speaking to WTHR, indicated that the team responding to the I-69 crash was expected to be on-site for a protracted period, advising drivers to prepare for delays spanning at least two hours.
Details regarding the number of vehicles involved and the extent of any injuries were firstly sparse, but the situation on I-69 was later clarified to involve "multiple semis with serious injuries," and a total of three vehicles, according to information provided by IndyStar.
