A tragic fire claimed the life of a man and two beloved pets in a Phoenix mobile home Sunday. Phoenix Fire Department crews arrived at the scene in a park on 15th Avenue, near Hatcher Road, around 10:30 a.m., as reported by AZ Family. They found the mobile home engulfed in flames and smoke, with obstacles inside complicating the rescue efforts.
Identified by his wife, Veronica Landera, the victim was Francisco Matias Wuon. AZ Family reports that Veronica was not present during the incident. Arriving to a sight of despair, she saw her husband on a stretcher; sadly, he passed away before reaching the hospital. Already coping with Francisco's recent unemployment and the lack of home insurance, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses.
According to FOX10 Phoenix, Veronica managed to escape the blaze, though the circumstances of her exit, either through a window or a door, remain unclear. "We then later found out that his significant other had made her way out of some sort of back exit, whether it be a window or a door. We evaluated her. She does not have injuries... however, we're gonna transport her as a precaution to the hospital to make sure she did not get any smoke inhalation," said Phoenix Fire Department Captain Rob McDade, crediting the firefighters' quick action for containing the fire to the original mobile home.
The accumulation of belongings inside the home was highlighted by the Phoenix Fire Department as a possible factor in the victim's inability to escape quickly. Captain Rob McDade told FOX10 Phoenix, "While making their interior attack, crews faced multiple obstacles in the form of boxes and personal belongings stacked high inside the home." A neighbor gave insights to AZ Family, stating that although Francisco had begun to clear the clutter, the fire's aftermath has prompted concerns over the park's overall safety due to the similar state of other properties.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is suspected to be accidental. While Phoenix firefighters did not suffer injuries during the operation, the loss of life and pets underscores the potential dangers of excessive household clutter—raising awareness about fire safety in densely populated living spaces like mobile home parks.
