A confrontation that began in the virtual world of NBA 2K25 took a deadly turn in the physical realm last Thursday, Aug. 14, when a dispute over a PlayStation game resulted in a shooting at a northwest Miami-Dade apartment complex. It has been reported by Local 10 News that Derrick Terrell Ates II, 23, was arrested yesterday morning on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting of Izayah Gaffney Lilavois, 25.
According to the arrest documents, Ates had been arguing with Lilavois over live chat while playing the popular basketball simulation game. After Ates sent him his address, the two decided to meet at the Park Towers Apartments complex near the Golden Glades Interchange. The argument escalated upon their meeting, and Lilavois reportedly slapped Ates, which led Ates to pull out a gun and fatally shot the unarmed Lilavois "multiple times" before fleeing back to his apartment.
The tragic encounter left Lilavois dead soon after being airlifted to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, as stated by deputies. Ates subsequently surrendered to authorities and, as per deputies, provided a "full confession." The arrest report has not clarified, however, whether the two individuals had ever met in person before the fatal encounter. NBC Miami's coverage of the incident also confirmed that Ates was expected to appear in bond court, with his mugshot showing him in a hospital gown, but with the bond yet to be set.
Local 10 News also mentioned that at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Ates is being held.
