Early this morning, a man was detained after authorities say he set a fire to a motel room in Hallandale Beach. The incident unfolded at the El Rancho Motel, situated at 424 North Federal Highway. Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue and the Hallandale Beach Police Department reported the flames started around 2:43 a.m., as per NBC Miami. The fire required the response of approximately 40 firefighters who managed to control the situation in about 10 minutes.
The suspect, identified by police as Paul Thomas Hough, reportedly set the victim's room ablaze following a denied entry. The act of setting the fire has left a woman without a home, according to a friend who witnessed the aftermath, told 7News. No injuries were reported in the incident, but the fire has displaced two adults who are now being assisted by the American Red Cross.
In the aftermath, the external portion of the unit displayed a shattered window and soot-stained glass, indicative of the intense heat and destruction inside. While the woman affected by the fire declined to comment on camera, visibly shaken, a 911 dispatcher relayed the details of the event, stating, "A 25 residential fire at 424 North Federal Highway, the ex-boyfriend came to the house and set a fire outside of her home, in front of that 1020." The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office, as noted by 7News.
Hallandale Beach Police stress the importance of fire safety and caution within the community, urging residents to never permit entry to unknown or unstable individuals and to maintain functioning smoke detectors. They also advise having an evacuation plan and practicing it regularly, as well as reporting any suspicious activity promptly. Although charges against Hough have not been made immediately clear, the case continues to unfold as authorities delve deeper into the investigation.
