A man was fatally shot at a Family Dollar store on Indianapolis' northwest side during what police describe as a disturbance between multiple people who knew each other. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a report of a shooting at the discount retailer located in the 6000 block of Michigan Road last night.
According to FOX59, officers arrived at around 5:30 p.m. to find the victim, who has not been named, with gunshot wounds lying in the store's doorway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe, the shooting occurred inside the store and stemmed from a pre-existing dispute. "Once again, violence has interrupted what would’ve been a beautiful Saturday here in Indianapolis," IMPD Officer Drew Brown stated during a media briefing, as reported by FOX59.
IMPD reports that the store was open and several uninvolved parties were inside at the time of the incident, including children. The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the Marion County Coroner’s Office, detailed WTHR. Neither a suspect nor suspects have been identified, but IMPD does not consider there to be an ongoing threat to the community, as the incident appears to be isolated to the individuals involved in the dispute.
The shooting investigation is ongoing and IMPD is canvassing the area for evidence, according to reports from WISH-TV. The Family Dollar is said to be cooperating with investigators. IMPD has a victims assistance team responding to support the decedent's family and friends through what Officer Brown described as "an unimaginable loss."
