The Healey-Driscoll administration in Massachusetts has secured a $3.5 million federal grant to push forward with plans for the West-East Rail. This funding, which comes from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor Identification and Development Program (Corridor ID), will contribute to the development of the Boston-Albany Corridor Service Development Plan (SDP), aiming to enhance train services connecting Boston to Albany through Springfield, as Mass.gov reported.
Governor Maura Healey has expressed gratitude towards MassDOT for their efforts in securing the funding, asserting that, "We are full steam ahead on building West-East Rail, and this latest federal funding win brings us one step closer to delivering this for Massachusetts." Supporting Healey's perspective, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll acknowledged the transformative impact rail service can have on communities and economies. According to a statement by Congressman Richard Neal obtained from the Mass.gov article, the initiative will play a critical role in boosting connectivity and economic growth in the region.
In its commitment to expand rail service and bring about economic development opportunities, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has now accumulated $150 million in federal funds for the West-East Rail endeavor, with Senator Ed Markey specifying that the project is about "building a connected economy, expanding opportunity, and forging a brighter and more sustainable future." Reinforcing these sentiments, Senator Elizabeth Warren highlighted the collective efforts and dedication required to realize the West-East Rail vision, as she told Mass.gov.
