The Memphis community is mourning the loss of Thabo, the prominent male lion and long-time resident of the Memphis Zoo, following complications from a surgical procedure. Thabo was 16 years old at the time of his death, which occurred during an operation aimed at alleviating pain from a bladder stone, Action News 5 reported.
The zoo noted that despite the risks associated with surgery at Thabo's advanced age, the intervention was a necessary step in attempting to improve his quality of life. Unfortunately, after the surgery last Thursday, the beloved lion stopped breathing and could not be revived by the veterinary team. "Despite the best efforts of our skilled veterinary and keeper teams, Thabo stopped breathing during recovery, and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful," the Memphis Zoo stated, per FOX 13.
Born at the Tulsa Zoo in Oklahoma, Thabo had been a significant presence at the Memphis Zoo since his arrival nearly 15 years ago. His regal bearing and morning roars were a familiar and comforting presence to visitors and staff alike. The Memphis Zoo, reflecting on Thabo's importance, said, "For nearly 15 years, Thabo was the face of the Memphis Zoo. As the first animal to greet guests upon entering, he welcomed and bid farewell to literally millions of visitors, leaving an impression that will not soon fade," according to WREG News.
In remembrance of Thabo, whose name means "happiness" in Tswana, the Memphis Zoo has invited the public to visit his familiar haunt near the entrance of the premises to pay their respects. The zoo suggested that visitors are welcome to place cards or flowers at the lion statue on the Avenue of Animals in Thabo's memory, a site that for years was graced by his noble countenance. His legacy, intertwined with the zoo's mission of African lion conservation, will remain a significant chapter in the Memphis Zoo's story.
