Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez's dedication to local governance has earned him the prestigious 2025 Home Rule Hero Award. The Florida League of Cities recognized Fernandez for his advocacy efforts during the legislative session, emphasizing the protection and self-governance of Florida's municipal governments, as reported by the City of Miami Beach's official website.
Evidently committed to ensuring local voices dictate their own communities' futures, Commissioner Fernandez worked with state lawmakers by providing local insights and real-world examples that highlighted the significance of local decision-making. "Whether its pushing back against broad preemptions that allow out-of-scale development, fighting to preserve our cherished Art Deco District or opposing prior efforts for the expansion of casinos, I’m honored by the trust placed in me to defend Miami Beach’s right to protect its identity," Fernandez shared in a statement obtained by the City of Miami Beach's press release.
Among the commissioner's significant contributions was his work on securing amendments to the Live Local Act to maintain architectural standards in historic areas. His efforts also saw him rallying against legislative measures such as the expansion of casino gambling, standing firm on preserving the city's cultural essence. In addition, Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones acknowledged Fernandez's tenacity, noting in a statement obtained by the City of Miami Beach, "I’m so proud to congratulate my good friend, Commissioner Fernandez, for always leading a good fight in Tallahassee to preserve the values and architectural aesthetics that make Miami Beach not only a unique global destination but also a special part of my district."
Fernandez's approach to tackling local issues extends beyond opposition to harmful bills. Partnering with real estate industry leaders, he has been active in addressing condominium approval delays to protect buyers and tenants. Launching a historic update to the city’s Historic Preservation Code, Commissioner Fernandez demonstrated leadership, shaping the initiative through dialogue with various stakeholders, setting forth legislation for modernizing review processes and incentivizing preservation efforts for historic buildings. "I’m grateful to the state legislators who have given me the opportunity to collaborate toward meaningful solutions on behalf of the constituents we collectively serve," told Fernandez the City of Miami Beach's news release.
His unwavering support for local decision-making and community values has not gone unnoticed. Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner praised Fernandez for his poise and professionalism. In another show of acknowledgment, Florida State Senator Ileana Garcia expressed appreciation for Fernandez's bipartisan work ethic, stating, "Alex is a tireless advocate for preserving the unique character and heritage of our district — especially the rich Art Deco legacy of Miami Beach," according to a statement featured by the City of Miami Beach's official announcement.
