Miami-Dade County is under the microscope after Governor DeSantis' Florida Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has decided to swiftly review the county's financials. In a move that has raised many an eyebrow locally, the state administration is shining its spotlight on how the county's funds are managed. This recent development comes following a letter from DOGE to Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, to which she has responded with a promise of transparency and cooperation.
In a statement, Mayor Levine Cava released, she stressed the extensive measures her administration has taken to ensure financial transparency and accountability. "We are aware that Governor DeSantis’s Florida Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has initiated a review of Miami‑Dade County’s finances. Since I took office as Mayor, I’ve governed with strong fiscal accountability and ensured Miami‑Dade operates under one of the most transparent and well‑governed local systems in the nation," she explained, as noted by the county's official website. The county's efforts appear not only to sustain, but to to also deepen the public’s access to their financial workings, offering real-time data through an online checkbook portal, among other measures.
As per the detailed response obtained by Miami‑Dade County's official release, Mayor Levine Cava is proud of the fiscal discipline her team has exercised which includes two consecutive years of tax reductions—all while ensuring that the county’s essential services are untouched. "And I am proud that we reduced the tax rate two years in a row to a historic low, the lowest combined tax rate since 1982, while continuing to operate an effective, efficient local government," she emphasized.
Despite the county's stated commitment to transparency, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has expressed concerns about possible overreach, defending her administration against what she described as unnecessary duplication of efforts. She emphasized the county's openness to working with the state and the public, asserting confidence in the integrity of county operations. However, she also signaled that the administration would resist any politically motivated attempts to interfere with its work.
