Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith has faced a tough stretch on the hardwood. Following a meniscal tear sustained during his training stint in Baltimore, the 28-year-old's knee called for surgical intervention. The team confirmed the procedure was a success, carried out by the Heat's physician, Dr. Harlan Selesnick, at the Doctors Hospital Surgery Center. "Haywood appeared in 74 games (42 starts) with the HEAT last season," the NBA's official website reported, capturing his statistical contributions with precision.
During last year's run, Highsmith clocked in average numbers that would have had any bench player itching for a first-team spot: 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, among other improvements. Those 1.5 assists per game, however, they will have to wait, with rehabilitation on Highsmith's immediate agenda following the 35-minute surgical sojourn, as reported by Local10. The Heat says he's expected to sit out the bounce ball action for 8-10 weeks.
Highsmith's off-court narrative took a serious spin last year. In February of 2024, Highsmith's black 2021 Audi A5 collided with a 1999 Toyota 4Runner, which subsequently hit a good Samaritan, causing severe injuries to the civilian. The victim, identified as Alekxei Pino, then 21, sustained horrific injuries from the crash. Details have been diligently recorded by Local10, complete with the painful specifics of Pino's injuries.
For Highsmith and the Heat, the pattern is clear but unwelcome: he hit peak form, then setbacks followed. Now, he begins rehab, aiming to return to the career-best stats noted in the NBA’s coverage.
