As Miami streets prepare to welcome a new kind of patrol, it's not just the officers who are undergoing a rigorous initiation, but their equine partners as well. Local10 reports that five Miami police officers alongside their horses have almost completed six weeks of intense training for the city's mounted patrol units. The finish line near, they anticipate hitting the pavements soon, with the unit's graduation slated for August 27.
Miami Police Sgt. Eric Marti highlighted the significance of exposing the horses to various stimuli, stating, "The more stimulus they get here in training, the better they react when they’re out on the street." Representing the City of Miami Police, Sgt. Marti will oversee the incorporation of the new recruits, currently in their final stages of a demanding program, which includes conditioning the horses to tolerate disturbances such as sirens, simulated gunfire, and unpredictable scenarios, as per Local10.
According to an interview with Local10, Officer Melanie Rodriguez shared insights into the challenging but rewarding training process, saying, "Oh 100%, I’ve fallen off the horse a few times. It can happen to anybody while you’re riding, getting on, getting off. There’s definitely painful moments." Despite the falls, Rodriguez is eager to graduate and bring her connection with her horse Cody to the city streets, enhancing community relations.
The application of the mounted patrol, however, extends beyond mere crowd control during events. Marti expressed to WSVN that the mounted unit plays an integral role in everyday community policing, helping to strike up conversations and interactions with citizens that may not typically engage with law enforcement. "It’s great when it comes to crowd control. Everybody already assumes mounted is crowd control," Marti said. "However, we’re great every day, when it comes to community policing."
With graduation approaching, the officers, as part of the training, learned everything from the ground up, as highlighted by Marti in an interview with WSVN.
