Motorists in mid-Missouri can expect to see plenty of orange cones and traffic signs starting as early as next Monday, with several highway maintenance and construction projects scheduled to take place. According to MoDOT, weather permitting, work across multiple counties, including Boone, Callaway, and Cole, will bring a spate of new upgrades, lane closures, and potential travel delays. Among the highlighted upgrades are pedestrian facility improvements on Route TT in Boone County and roadside work on Missouri Route 94 in Callaway County.
Significant construction on major thoroughfares like U.S. Route 63 and I-70 will involve bridge construction and interchange improvements, with single-lane traffic and width restrictions in place, which residents driving both north and south through Columbia can expect traffic to be slightly more constricted, slower, these changes owing to the ongoing "Improve I-70" program, an expansive project not anticipated for full completion until 2027. Projects are set to include nightly work between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., specifically on Route TT, to minimize disruption during peak travel times.
Roundabout constructions at key intersections, particularly the one at Route K and Old Plank Road in Boone County and another at the intersection of Route 52 and Route 5 in Versailles, Morgan County, promise enhanced traffic flow upon their projected completion in late 2025. Rehabilitation work persists on U.S. Route 54 in Cole County, which will see one lane open with an 11-foot width limitation and speed reductions for multiple bridge projects, some of which, such as over the Moreau River Drainage, are slated to last through October 2025.
MoDOT's latest scheduling also marks extensive roadside and pavement rehabilitation efforts throughout the diverse landscapes of mid-Missouri, this range of work from Route J in Camdenton County to Route 87 across Howard County, pledges smoother commutes and safer pedestrian passages with completion times extending into the autumn months of 2025. As crews ready for these operations, heightened precautions are accentuated for drivers in areas where flaggers will navigate traffic through the work zones, particularly during culvert replacements and resurfacing efforts on U.S. Route 50 that will stretch into May 2026.
Despite the anticipation of disruption, MoDOT stresses safety above all else with a firm reminder that, "MoDOT asks all motorists to work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones." Motorists should remain vigilant for slow-moving equipment and temporary closures that will inevitably accompany these necessary improvements to mid-Missouri's road infrastructure.
